I’m going to end this year with what some will see as a political statement. I suppose that someone whose field of study was Strategic Studies can’t help but land there at least once in a year.
The winds of change are apparent, with all the unpredictability and chaos that it may well visit upon all of us. Why this should be the case is for the pundits and political scholars. All that I see of this coming year is, in a nutshell, worrisome.
Irrespective of one’s politics, it is clearly evident that there hasn’t been a political schism in global politics as great as the one we’re now living in, within the last ninety years. Chaos never breeds security. Chaos never leads to rationality.
My hope is that all of us face the winds of change with courage and resolve towards a time where respect, acceptance and democratic institutions once again find favour amongst the majority of us.
Those who are not students of history, are doomed to repeat it.
At present, a maelstrom seems to be descending on all of us.
Happy New Year.
