In one of my previous blogs, I intimated that KTM would be increasing the number of engines that it produces in China. The original LC8c engine known as both the 799cc “790” and the 889cc or “890” is being produced in China, now.

The first bike to get the new LC8c made in China is expected to be the 990 Duke, which may arrive as a 2024 model according to Cycle World. It is anticipated that the “990” variant will have in excess of 130 hp and a redesign intended to future-proof the engine, allowing for further capacity and power increases.
Like the current LC8c engine, the new one will be manufactured in China by CFMoto-KTM joint venture. In the years to come, it could appear in a CFMoto-branded bike, as well as in KTMs.

Last year I took a 790 for a ride and was pleasantly surprised. Whether made in China or Austria, the bike was excellent. The only reason I chose not to buy it at the time was its lack of wind protection, as I do a lot of longer distance travel. I’ve been following CFMoto for awhile as well. Obviously the joint venture with KTM has had benefits for both manufacturers.
According to Visor Down, KTM will be building a new 1390 engine at CFMoto’s manufacturing centre in China. The Pierer Group who own KTM and a sizeable piece of CFMoto have intimated that there will be more future engines designed and built in Hangzhou, China’s facility as the relationship with CFMoto becomes more entrenched.
I currently ride a litre bike that puts out 142 hp. I will take the new Duke 990 for a ride this spring at the earliest opportunity and provide a review.
Ciao.
