New Silicon Anode Batteries: Long Range, Very Quick Charging

Enevate battery just released a report on its new battery technology and its relationship and licensing of the technology to Lightning Motorcycles (February 13, 2024). Lightning Motorcycles has entered production with the LS218 using large 47Ah extreme-fast-charge Si-dominant lithium-ion cells from Enevate.

Range anxiety, will in the future, be non-existent. This is the specification for the LS218, now in production.

1) 10 minute fast charges to 80% SOC

2) 200+ Freeway mile range with 28.2kWh usable battery pack

3) 248 rwhp and 226 ft/lbs of torque

4) 100 mile charge costs of $2.36 on level chargers

In November of last year, Lightning rode their development motorcycle for a 710-mile round trip in one day from Hollister, California, to Irvine, enabled by Enevate’s fast charge Si technology.

This enables what is a quantum leap in usability. Enevate’s CEO, Bob Kruse was quoted;

“History will record this industry first as other adopt this technology. For the consumer, this means that riders of electric motorcycles with Enevate technology can now ride all day alongside conventional motorcycles without waiting hours on a charge cord.”

Investors in Enevate include the following:

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, LG, Samsung Venture, Fisher Jurvtson, Tsing Capital, Infinite Potential Technologies, Presidio Ventures, Lenovo, CEO Capital, and Bangchak.

Lightning Motorcycles now produces two platforms in Hollister, California and is preparing to expand production and extend its product line into several additional platforms to address the global market.

This is the beginning of an electric revolution that is already sweeping Asia. Europe is on the cusp of a massive investment and expansion of electric motorcycles due to global warming and new mandates it has imposed on zero-emission vehicles by 2030 and 2035. Six automakers and 30 countries have already adopted zero emission standards to be in effect by 2035.

In North America, Canada has committed to zero emission vehicles only being produced within 11 years and to complete electrification charging availability in order to meet emission targets.

A wide range of electric motorcycle companies are in discussion with Enervate related to its new Si-lithium anode rapid charge battery technology. Seeing as the Lightning 218 is the fastest accelerating motorcycle on the planet (0-60 mph in 2.0 seconds) with a top speed of 218 mph, one could hardly find fault with its performance.

Pricing is expensive (still cheaper than Harley Davidson’s CVO motorcyles) but prices are expected to drop successively based on economy of scale, demand and increased production capacity, and through the development of a marketing network and the creation of dealerships.

If, as it is suggested, electric sport touring motorcycle prices drop to comparable pricing for ICE engines, then acceptance will occur much quicker. Filling the equivalent of a fuel tank will cost less than $8.00, compared with my present Ninja’s cost of $23.46 a tank, based on today’s gas price.
