On November 5th, it would seem that Ukraine’s survival became more tenuous as Donald J Trump was elected as the next President of the United States. Most American voting adults chose Trump, and with his election provided a mandate for the United States to stop supplying Ukraine with weapons, ammunition and intelligence.
Further, Trump has expressed his desire to remove the United States from NATO. Alarm bells are now ringing across Europe. Europeans had hoped that what Trump stated he would do was just rhetoric, and would never actually occur. I would suggest that the EU take him at his word, (of course, Trump’s word is anything other than truthful or reliable most of the time) as to be wrong, endangers not just the world order as we know it, but the sovereignty of all nations bordering Russia.
Trump’s love of Putin, Kim Jong Un and Bibi Netanyahu makes sense when you realize that Trump meets all of the requirements of a sociopath. The deaths of 43,000 Palestinians in Gaza doesn’t even faze him. He’ll provide Netanyahu, a war criminal, with a free hand in the creation of a one-state solution. Israel.

When one reads the ‘standard’ in the DSMV for sociopathy, Trump could be its poster child. He is willing to see thousands of people die in Ukraine and Gaza and risk or ignore further incursions by Russia into former Soviet Republics in order to satisfy his own twisted personal wishes. What kind of rational human being does this? No one, other than a sociopathic autocrat, and that’s what the U. S. elected on November 5th. The U.S. has as its President a man devoid of intelligence, rationality, empathy, or reason.
There is a reason no living President wants to be associated with Trump, including George W. Bush. He is unethical and immoral, and the total experience of trump has been one of dishonour and dishonesty. Remember, Trump actually attempted to overthrow democracy.
What does this mean for NATO and neighbours of the U.S.? It is now absolutely imperative that the EU and NATO immediately act to contain and if necessary go to war with Russia. Putin, will not stop. He is also a sociopath and psychopath, taking any measure, including performing murders and going to war in order to advance his personal aims and wealth. It’s estimated that Putin may have stolen as much as 200 Billion dollars from the Russian treasury. Something I’m sure, Trump would be pleased to emulate.
In response to the insanity on display, the remaining NATO members need to rapidly increase their military forces, expand and fund the industrial complex and the manufacture of ammunition and weapon systems. The United States cannot be trusted, and may well openly support Putin and Netanyahu if Trump and his immoral team are not stopped.
Therefore, creating distance from the United States, and seeking affinity as well as greatly expanded free trade with other democratic states that have the better interests of their citizens at heart should be the focus of democracies in Europe, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Republic of Korea. Conscription should be reinstituted in order for western democracies to meet the demands of a much larger military. In the face of Trump’s intent to withdraw from NATO, democracies should mandate the spending of 4% of GDP in order to provide state-of-the-art weapons and weapon platforms for their militaries.
Without the U.S. in NATO, the organization should immediately admit Ukraine into both NATO and the EU, as well as drawing a red line in Ukraine, that if crossed will constitute war between NATO and Russia. NATO should immediately place a 300,000 man army in Ukraine, Poland and Germany, similar to post WW2 in Europe, made up of units from across NATO countries on the basis of population.
Initially this will be very difficult as the military forces are not in a state of readiness. Ammunition, weapons, training, logistics and the funds to keep this force in a state of readiness, will all be needed. But, this is more than doable, as Poland has proven, spending 3.9% of its GDP on military weapons and infrastructure in 2023, and their President stating emphatically that if 8% of GDP is requisite, it will be met.
Canada, in 1953 spent 8% of GDP on the military, clearly understanding that a good defence is the only way to deter dictators, having experienced what an ill-prepared military means when war comes. Subsequent Prime Minsters have become, lazy and complacent as the first priority of any government is to protect its citizens. And now sovereignty is at stake in the coming years, possibly from both North and South.
Trump, not yet in office has intimated that finding a place for Palestinians should be simple. “There are lots of places we can put them.” Trump doesn’t care how irrational that statement is, especially since he intends to deport up to 24 million from the U.S., if he has his way. Climate change will only make refugees and migration more common, with all the attendant social unrest and its ramifications. Trump, supports isolationism, yet his policies threaten to create instability, economic depression and wars. He’s also suggested that Taiwan may have to look after itself. His grasp on foreign affairs borders on childish.
Foreign policy and rationality are about to part and go on separate paths.
There is no time to waste. Between Russian, China, Israel, Iran and North Korea’s ambitions and plans, the future looks, ugly, brutish and short. Combined with Trump’s ignorance of climate change and science in general, his willingness to add even further CO2 and methane emissions over the coming years as he not just allows, but enables fossil fuel extraction and its use. The world is destined to see CO2 reach 450 ppm, the AMOC to stop entirely, Antarctic glaciers to slide into the ocean rising sea level by as much as 10 feet by 2050, and causing natural ecosystems to collapse.
We are sitting on a ticking time bomb, and we have no idea of the moment it’s programmed to go off. The doomsday clock just leapt to one second to midnight.
