The Last Day

Remember yesterday.

Write down the date. Better yet, have it tattooed onto your dominant hand. It was the last day of normality, of reason, of intelligent discourse, of truth. From now on, a fascist and his gang of greed will make the rules, control those enforcing the law, those creating new policy. They will redesign education from kindergarten through post-secondary. Institutions, fearing being targeted, will be mute. Behind the scenes, a more important group sit inside boardrooms planning the disassembly of democracy. They will have all the tools at their disposal, and they will not waste time. Time is of the essence.

The blueprint has been created and only awaited today. The day of implementation. The day of retribution, hallelujah!

Americans are generally easily manipulated. Once they have been ‘captured’ by lies and the truth has been destroyed, they are so desperate for ‘the promised land’, that they will believe anything that suggests that they will see that the ‘others’ will be taken down, emasculated and powerless. It won’t be enough to simply be self-satisfied and smug, no, it will require denigration and the demeaning of those who came before. All stops will be pulled to ensure that truth is extinguished, once and for all. In fact, 49.9 percent of America’s voters, voted for trump. Less than half of eligible voters.

On the basis of that “landslide” (?) America’s angry, retributive and ugly minority provided a sociopath with all the tools necessary to take apart the mechano set of democracy. All that ‘they’ now require is time and the inaction of those sheep who gave them the power to act. It won’t be until the oligarch’s come for the masses, that they will realize they’ve been duped. Every social program that acts as a safety net for society will be hollowed-out. The programs may well remain, but it won’t be until those who need its offerings that the final act of the charade will make itself known.

In the meantime, hate and mighty retribution will create the grand spectacle, — no different than the gladiatorial arena, where the ‘chosen’ will be scythed down by the mighty hand of one only known as ‘the muskrat’. A billionaire and his court of corruption will saw through institutions designed to control greed, kleptocracy and autocracy. Bobbleheads will replace those with skill and experience, and the rules to administration will be carved into the chest of every sycophant. ‘Get even, get them out, make them pay, and destroy them.”

Americans filled with the glory of the gory, will bring their beer, chips, hot dogs and MAGA hats to the Coliseum. There they will regale the dissection and destruction as they scream epithets and threats to those unprotected and disarmed awaiting dissection.

“ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?”, will be the rallying cry of the drooling congregation. Some, so enamoured with the spectacle will seek out their own victims, out in the real world. They’ll carry torches and weapons, descending on all of the places where democracy keeps watch, and beat the living hell out of them. Of course there will be some good people in the stands, but generally, they won’t be bringing their best.

The orgy of victimization and the loosing of the proudest of boys will result in fear, debasement, and, for a time, silence. People will be cowed by the inability to pull any levers that might still be accidentally connected to democratic institutions.

And so, now we reconstruct the past. The following was not meant as a reminder of what fascism looks like, — it was meant to be a beacon for democracy to enshrine in its day to day interactions with those showing the slightest inclination to excess and willful devolution of democracy.

It seems it went unheard.

Martin Niemoller was a German Lutheran Pastor and theologian. An anti-communist, he supported Hitler’s rise to power. But when Hitler rose to power and insisted on the supremacy of the state over religion, Niemoller became disillusioned. He became the leader of a group of German clergymen opposed to Hitler.

In 1937 he was arrested and eventually confined in Sachsenhausen and Dachau. He was released in 1945 by the Allies.

While in Dachau he wrote the following;

“First they came for the communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a communist

Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me.”

Today, I reread a post by Andrew Coyne, a columnist from Toronto. He said the following,

“Nothing mattered, in the end. Not the probable dementia, the unfathomable ignorance, the emotional incontinence; not, certainly, the shambling, hate-filled campaign, or the ludicrously unworkable anti-policies.

The candidate out on bail in four jurisdictions, the convicted fraud artist, the adjudicated rapist and serial sexual predator, the habitual bankrupt, the stooge of Vladimir Putin, the man who tried to overturn the last election and all of his creepy retinue of crooks”,

Today, you enshrine populism, ignorance, arrogance and hate. Today, America is, for me, no more.
