Canada’s relationship with the U.S., is at an all time ebb. Personally, I would go further and suggest that Canada truly only has one option, — avoidance.
In my previous article, I suggested that attempting to ‘deal’ with Donald Trump is fraught with problems. Problems that Canada cannot solve.
Irrespective of how you view Trump, – call him a transactionalist, an opportunist, a extortionist or simply, a demented human being, hell bent on enriching himself at every opportunity, and if held to account, a retributive sociopath, who will become hell-bent on destroying whomever, or whatever refused him his way.
Psychiatrists and psychologists all have opinions and pragmatic approaches to minimize the damage in relation to exposure to a sociopath. The problem is that any and all of those approaches are either moot or counter-productive when one faces the most powerful man in the world with the means and mechanisms to destroy at will.
The psychiatric community suggests that the only real option is to look after one’s personal safety by extrication, — by sheer avoidance.
The problem is that for a delusional, demented or mentally incompetent human who possesses all of the power of the Presidency of the United States, avoidance on this little blue orb, know as earth, is virtually impossible.
So here we are.
Canada faces the unenviable position of being a cell-mate of a dangerous offender. One who possesses a shotgun under this cot’s pillow, an AR-15 hanging over his bed and a vial of poison in his pocket.
You, the cell-mate, must find a way to not anger your compatriot, while somehow extricating yourself from the potential violence or death that he may well have planned for you.
Defence? Unlikely. Separation? Impossible. Overt action? Counter-productive, unless one can be guaranteed of the immediate ‘death’ of the cell-mate.
The keys to the cell are held by a group of 535 semi-delusional people. Some have moments of lucidity. Some, never. Yet your life is dependent upon the actions of the ‘keepers of the keys’. Only they can act. Only they can, — if not control, sanction or eliminate the threat that the cell-mate poses.
And so, you walk the tightrope of irrationality, irresponsibility, ignorance, arrogance and stupidity that your sociopathic cell-mate poses, hoping for intervention, but expecting nothing but a belaboured death,–painful, torturous and without a timely end.
At least for almost three and a half more years.
That isn’t to say that we won’t do our best to make ourselves immune to the terror of ignorance. We will.
But the outcome is never in doubt, regardless of the cost, which may well be immense.
Canada must extricate itself from a relationship that has become dangerous, willfully ignorant and filled with hazards.
There is no arbitration, mediation or action that can dissolve the situation, temporarily.
There isn’t any way to get a restraining order.
But once extrication is accomplished, and avoidance maintained, — then Canada will never, ever, either trust the United States of Retribution and Irrationality again, or revisit any form of relationship.
America is on its own.
It is no friend.
It is no ally.
It is no partner.
It is simply the executioner of reason, logic and rationality on the international order, now of disorder.
The restraining order is being signed, and our accomplices will arm themselves accordingly and build permanent walls against the possibility of attack.
We shall do the same.
America cannot be trusted.
Ever, again.
