Celebrated by some, and bemoaned by others, it appears that one of the most performance oriented producers of electric motorcycles, Energica has met its demise. Unable to attract investment, and citing supply chain and a downturn in the electric vehicle market in general, the company today stated, “Despite the efforts from the management in actively and extensively pursuing a search for new investors — always with the aim of preserving going concern in the best interest of creditors — it has become clear in the last few hours that these alternative options are no longer viable, thus leaving the company with no other choice than resolving for the opening of a bankruptcy judicial liquidation, thus allowing repayment of creditors to the extent possible from the proceeds of liquidation.”
The former winner of the MotoE and official supplier to MotoE for four consecutive seasons, and since 2021 owned by the American firm Ideanomics, it has been apparent for some time that a sharp decline in the electric vehicle market had taken its toll. Energica may well be a bellwether for the motorcycle industry as a whole as a number of manufacturers of electric motorcycles appear to be in the same situation with respect to sales and an overall downturn within motorcycle enthusiasts for electric offerings. ARC motorcycles and Completely Motorbikes are in similar straights at the present time, both under administration for bankruptcy.
It’s indeed unfortunate, as in terms of the global market, projections of growth suggest that according to motorcyclesdata.com, “the 2025-2030 outlook is promising.” While China and India dominate the electric motorcycle market, within the European Union, Turkey stands out as the largest market with an impressive 290% increase in sales from 2023 to 2024.” However, for the short term, sales of electric motorcycles in Europe outside of Turkey have seen sharp reductions in sales. Most notably, France (-23.9%) and the Netherlands 9-56.8).
At the same time, global motorcycles sales (mostly ICE motorcycles) saw a robust growth of 5%.
