Last night a hockey game became something else. A political statement. For Canada it represented the absolute fact, that Canada does not want to be, nor will it allow itself to be, part of the US. It also signalled a change that will likely impact hockey, and possibly professional sports across the western democracies.
Next year, the US should be banned from the tournament, replaced by the Czech Republic. That should extend to all of the international sports, including the olympics. Canada and all the European nations should boycott the Olympics. America can play with itself, metaphorically speaking. However, knowing Trump, that might not be a metaphor.
If the US were dropped from the tournament we could simply call it, The Three Amigos Tournament.
Canada should begin a new tournament to replace the four nations tournament, and only include countries that are actually democracies. But it should not be constrained to simply hockey, it should include all sports.
If the US, Russia and China want to have their own tournaments they should do so. Call them the Axis of Evil Games. It sort of has a nice ring to it. One, we in Canada don’t want to belong to.
The new games should be called the ‘Democracy Games’, and only be held in democracies and only admit democracies.
As for those countries that aren’t?
