The Financial Times suggested today that Canada will end up ‘tied to the U.S.’ after the tariff dust settles because of geography and the rationale for proximal trade.
Actually, I disagree wholeheartedly.
Canada got into this mess with the U.S., simply because of proximity and trust.
We once had a 75 year close relationship with the U.S. that spanned economics, military cooperation and cultural/social interests.
As of now, we don’t.
Trust, no longer exists, thanks to a sociopathic President, who with malice, tore up the trade agreements that he himself agreed to in 2014.
So much for trust.
Then there’s the issue of ethics.
Sorry….I’m just kidding. Trump doesn’t have any.
His zero-sum interactions are not ‘trade discussions’, they are simply extortion.
Trump doesn’t want to cooperate or collaborate, he simply wants to win.
Competing would be to do so on even terms, but Trump can’t stand even terms.
It’s all about the win.
However, when it comes to international trade, putting a gun to your neighbour, former trade partner and ally, seems, ever for trump, a little dense.
America can win a trade battle by extorting its neighbours, but it will lose the war, and the reason is simple.
Canada will go to the enemy of my enemy, who is quickly becoming our trade ‘friend’.
America is destined to get exactly what it wants.
Isolation.
It won’t win any future collaboration, beneficial trade or military cooperation.
WE DON’T TRUST YOU.
I can’t make it any clearer than that.
We won’t turn our back on you America as we don’t think we can.
We’ll simply move away from America’s sphere of influence.
Yes, it will cost us.
Yes, it will take time.
And Yes, it will be the best decision Canadians ever make.
Selling our resources for what they are actually worth to a world that needs steel, aluminum, uranium, minerals of all kinds, including rare earth minerals, oil, gases (CNG, LNG, LPG) energy and water is now the mantra and the plan.
America has burned a bridge it won’t be able to rebuild, ever.
Canada is going to pursue a greatly enlarged relationship with China, Japan, Korea, the U.K.. and the U.E.
Our resources are in demand, and your President has made it clear that “he doesn’t need anything from Canada.”
Well, we’re glad to hear it, because we need even less from the U.S.
Every single product that America produces, Canada can buy cheaper from another nation.
It’s time to change our 75 year relationship, once and for all, and for Canada to continue to sell its increasing resources and commodities to friends and partners.
Extortion and threats may be America’s chosen future.
But this is one game that America will lose, because Canada doesn’t play games.
We’re out.
So enjoy your isolation America, because we will.
