Sir Keir Starmer may well like to play both sides of the street, but for Europe, Starmer is attempting to ‘have his cake and eat it too.”
The reality is that Europe won’t let the U.K. cosy up to a new trade relationship while it maintains its own rules created by leaving the European Union.
The “Independent” did a story today on just what exactly Starmer is up to, because for Europe, you’re either with Europe, or you’re not.
Brexit has proven to be both an economic and political disaster for the United Kingdom, which it seems, is no longer truly united. Scotland may well be the next to go, as it sees its future as European, verses a second class citizen within the U.K.
Along with Scotland leaving, it would be a blow to Britain, and its economic future as well. While Scotland is only 8% of Britain’s GDP, with only 5.5 million people, between services, oil, and tourism, it accounts for 80% of Scotland’s revenue.
It also accounts for a third of the U.K.’s land mass.
Starmer is between a rock and a hard place economically, and the future doesn’t look particularly bright, hence his wish to ‘make a deal’ with the U.S.
But Starmer should be aware of one overriding reality.
Trump cannot be trusted.
He will extort or steal whatever he can from Britain, as he has tried with Canada, Mexico, China and the E.U.
The problem for the U.K. is even more acute as the pound is not particularly resilient, inflation is high, and indebtedness is rising as Britian is spending 5% more than it has budgeted for again this year.
The anger in Europe for a U.K. that wants to play both sides of the street and still remain a ‘unofficial partner to the E.U.,’ is such that it may well backfire.
No deal with the E.U. and a bad deal with the United States.
Only time will tell, but the U.K. may find itself in the throes of another general election, if it all turns out badly, which, trusting Trump is likely to make that a reality.
