Last night Canada won.
Last night democracy won.
Not only because democracy at its best was in evidence, but because Canada is facing an existential threat in the guise of a once friend and ally.
Carney is a man uniquely qualified to represent Canada, having done so on many fronts with skill and business acumen.
The Conservatives, on the other hand, were led by a man who has illustrated no talent, and whose life’s experience amounts to being a sycophant to former members of the Conservative Party, themselves uniquely unimpressive.
Canadians deserve better than a man who couldn’t even tell who the opposition was, having spent his entire time in office, railing against what is now a phantom of the parliament, Justin Trudeau.
Rather than pivot immediately to Mark Carney, Pollievre appeared stuck, like a deer in the headlights of an oncoming freight train, with a similar outcome.
Pollievre believes he can continue, even though Canadians in his own riding would rather elect a neophyte to office than Pierre Polievre.
Polievre should resign, and enable a process that seeks to appoint a new leader who truly IS a change for Conservatives.
Yes, Pierre. It is time for a change, — one without you in it.
Having lost a 30 point lead to Mark Carney, Pollievre now seems irrelevant to the political process in Canada.
Pollievre’s judgement is suspect. That is more than obvious. Instead of defending Canada in its time of need, Polievre sided with Trump and his MAGA minions.
Canada doesn’t need a shill for a sociopath, thank you.
Interestingly, the Liberals are, as of this morning, winning or leading in 168 seats. It is still possible that the Liberals could reach majority territory, but not likely.
Which means that the Liberals will need the support of either the remaining NDP or BLOC parliamentarians.
It is likely that support will come from the NDP, as the BLOC would otherwise continue to play games in order to maintain influence within Quebec.
But for Carney, the question is at what cost?
Canada needs bold measures to develop the necessary plan to fight Trump, and the BQ, eternally self-interested, which may well explain why it lost ten seats in parliament in this election, is unlikely to be that party. They couldn’t even bring themselves to support a pipeline to tidewater through Quebec, even though it would benefit all Canadians, including Quebec.
Carney will be an outstanding Canadian Prime Minister. His background, CV, abilities and economic and business acumen will be sorely needed when fighting a man who has neither, but whom possesses a sociopath’s resolve to simply ‘win at all cost’.
Canada cannot afford a weak-kneed sycophant to a sociopath, and thankfully that ship has sailed, and while still afloat, is listing badly.
The NDP will likely support Carney, as Carney both needs the NDP vote and his agenda leans more to the left and the NDP, than towards the separatist BLOC Quebecois.
Polievre may still find a ‘safe’ riding politically to run in, but his tenure as leader is more than suspect. Polievre is tarnished. He is the man who took a 30 point lead into the basement, politically.
“Time for a Change”, indeed.
Let’s see if the Conservatives have the chutzpah to wipe the lipstick off the pig, and appoint a new leader.
Someone with some bona fides, not simply an abrasive personality and mouthy rhetoric.
