Nuclear Weapons for Canada?

The U.S. message has been loud and clear.

America’s liberal democratic “former allies” cannot rely on the U.S. to protect them.

America, under Trump, is threatening that he would like to ‘annex’ Canada.

Seeing as that will never happen, it is not impossible to conceive of a day where America decides to invade Canada.

There are two considerations as too America or Russia’s imperialist ambitions.

Either Canada develops what is know as the “Whole-of-Society-Defence”, or Canada acquires its own nuclear weapons, explicity for defence only.

Canadians understand very clearly that our partnership with America, is over. Worse, for Canada, is the implications of an American collapse as it relates to Canada’s security.

History confirms that predatory powers use force to seize territory and natural resources for the purpose of aggrandizement.

If ever there was a figure more susceptible to self-aggrandizment than Donald Trump, the world has not seen one.

The option.

Whole-of-society defence

Canada must now consider building a deterrent force consisting of the whole of society. This requires mandatory military service and nationwide civil defence preparations.

Canada has actually been going the opposite direction, which must now be reversed with bold measures, not hand-wringing and rhetoric.

Finland, deterred Russian invasion by the presence of a large, well-armed and well-trained domestic population that ensured that whoever invaded would become embroiled in a expensive, protracted ground war.

By developing such a force, Canada would ensure that whomever invaded woutd suffer high risks, low rewards, with skyrocketing costs and decaades-long timeframes.

Norway, Finland, Sweden and Switzerland all embrace whole-of-society defence. All have mandatory military service and civil defence, combined with sensible gun regulations that allow law-abiding citizens to be armed and contribute to national security.

A model that should be followed is Sweden’s “Total Defence” system.

America no longer extends its nuclear umbrella to Canada, and cannot be trusted to do so in any event.

Trump has also demanded that NATO countries stop relying on U.S. military and spend more on their own defence.

Both Germany and Poland are seeking nuclear protection, soliciting coverage from Britain and France.

Canada needs to contribute to the solution. As Canada is already a nuclear threshold state, with both the knowledge and the raw materials, Canada is in the best position to provide additional nuclear protection.

Once nuclear weapons were developed and deployed in Canada, it could coordinate a democratic nuclear umbrella to protect vulnerable allies and states.

Canada needs to shed the pacifist view if it wants to survive in a world of sharks. To deter aggression, Canadians need to change. They need to ‘grow up’ and realize that they may well no longer like the food being served, as Canada, is on the menu.

This is the price Canadians will need to pay, if we want to remain a sovereign nation in a world filled with nations seeking dominance, land acquisition and imperialist power.
