Pete Hoekstra doesn’t understand why Canadians are so frustrated.
At least according to the CBC today.
Really Petey?
Considering that you first denigrate our country, then apply tariffs, then threaten annexation and then get defensive about your own ignorance and your arrogant actions?
Too bad you hadn’t been talking to me Pete, because I’d make your hubris, arrogance and stupidity crystal clear to you.
You may well suggest that “tariffs are here to stay, and Canadians should accept that new reality”.
Okay, Pete. Fair enough.
Well, Canadians believe in free trade, and irrespective of what ‘you want’, we’ll trade with you if and when it serves Canadian interests, not your agenda.
Canada will continue to diversify. Sure it will take time, but America’s word is about as valuable as a Trump promise, so, we’re in no hurry.
We’ll trade with who we want, where we want, when we want. It’s our resources, our country and our policies, so unless you’re willing to actually look at ‘fair trade’, I would suggest that the vast majority of Canadians would like you to take your opinions, your attitude, your hubris and arrogance and go home to Michigan.
Believe me. You’ve got lots of problems to sort out in America.
Anyway, with any luck, we won’t be selling American-produced autos in Canada by 2030, instead, importing and producing Chinese vehicles in Canada.
And to put it bluntly. The fact that you put tariffs on everybody in the world is both irrational and is obviously highly offensive to Canadians.
We don’t give a damn if you think it’s fair.
It isn’t, irrespective of how many lies and how much bullshit you concoct in the Pinky Brain trust of the very White House.
Personally, I’d suggest that if booze is such a particular thorn in your side Pete, maybe you should get busy drinking some of it. Maybe it will improve your ‘spirits’ so to speak.
What we buy, and why we buy what we buy, is up to Canadians.
We don’t like your attitude and we don’t intend on visiting the U.S. anytime soon.
Conciliatory Approaches?
Are you kidding me Pete. You attack us economically, you threaten us and then you expect capitulation and conciliatory action in response?
Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe you’re drinking too much of your own product.
You’re right if you’re wondering whether we want to do business with America. Business requires trust. Business requires a relationship. A respectful interaction of collaboration, not zero-sum games Pete.
I think our actions are pretty clear Pete.
We’re doing business. We’re doing it with the EU, Japan, the Republic of Korea, with Australia, with New Zealand, with Brazil, and yes China.
Almost ten percent less with you in a year.
The intent is to that same thing repeatedly for the next ten years.
Zero-Sum? Yup. Zero plus zero is zero Pete.
As For Defence Procurement?
Once again you threaten.
Sorry, you’ve played that card. In fact it’s been overplayed.
Canada will buy what it chooses. That means in terms of military procurement, Canada intends on buying at least 70% of its weapons, systems, armaments and munitions from our partners in the EU, Japan, the ROK and Australia.
As for meeting U.S. expectations?
Sorry. We have our own priorities, and you aren’t one of them.
We will build a resolute military and increase its size to withstand any attempts by Russia or the United States to impose its will on Canada.
And just as you Mr. Hoekstra “enjoy defending the U.S. everyday”, so too will we in Canada defend Canadian sovereignty and the right to self-determination, irrespective if whether or not it does or doesn’t fall into America’s vision of subjective obeisance.
