Canada has been a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) since its inception in 1970. While there are 190 members of the treaty today, five nations, all with diplomatic status, have not signed to this day.
The rationale?
They required a nuclear deterrence because a neighbour harboured both weapons and the intention of aggression toward their state.
Essentially, that is the position that Canada now finds itself in.
The treaty is reviewed every five years by the signatories to it. The next review will occur in 2027.
However, much has transpired since 2022, not the least was the invasion of Ukraine, and just this month, the threat by the United States to ‘annex’ Canada.
Seeing as Canadians would rather join the E.U., or the U.K., rather than give up its sovereignty to America, and the fact that America’s nuclear umbrella now has a giant hole where Canada used to be, it is time for Canada to act in its own best interests and to approach other nuclear nations, including Britain and France to provide a nuclear deterrence to Canada as well.
Were Canada to procure French Ballistic submarines, a delivery platform used by France, or Dassault Rafale jets, it would be a simple process to install nuclear weapons on those platforms as they have already been designed to carry them.
This is no longer some irrational or irresponsible thought, as Canada now lies between two apparent ‘allies’, in Russia and the U.S., either of which may well have designs on Canadian territory and its sovereignty.
Canada has sold nuclear reactors to seven other nations, so the knowledge, expertise and necessary components for the development of nuclear weapons is already available in Canada.
Were France or Britain willing, Canada as a dependable, rational actor geopolitically should find a clear path to becoming a country with a nuclear weapons capability.
However, I would not be surprised to find that both America and Russia would attempt to refuse Canada access to nuclear weapons based on the hegemonic interests of both countries.
As a sovereign nation, Canada should not sign the agreement in 2027 and should begin the process of developing a nuclear weapons capability.
We should never again entrust America to protect Canadian interests.
America is no friend and no ally.
