The ‘Stop Tourism to the US’ Challenge to Canadians

Canadians spent over 20 billion dollars on tourism to the U.S. in 2024.

It’s time for Canadians to show their patriotic spirit in 2025, now that summer is here.

So Canada, the challenge is to post how you had a phenomenal vacation or holiday in Canada, as a first choice, and Europe, Mexico or the U.K., — in fact anywhere else but the U.S. this summer, fall and winter.

Post all of your exploits on Facebook or another social media and challenge all Canadians to:
“Stay away from the U.S.A.!”

Trump says he doesn’t need anything from Canada, so let’s take him at his word, and have Canadians, stay away.

Cancel your vacation plans, sports travel, (remember the World Cup will be in the U.S. as well as the next Olympics. Boycott them both. Go to watch a Premier League Game of your favourite team in England, Germany, Portugal, France or Spain. Put the money you would have spend in the Olympics in the U.S. to go watch your favourite sport in the EU.

And remember, you’ll save at least 35% on your travel costs by taking a vacation inside Canada. That means you can travel more, see more and enjoy more great Canadian destinations.

Do a wine tour in B.C. Or Ontario, go stay in a bed and breakfast in P.E.I., visit the Gaspe Peninsula or the incredible friendliness of Newfoundland.

Whatever you do, Canada’s National and Provincial Parks offer some of the most amazing landscapes on planet earth.

And on top of all of this natural beauty, Canada is infinitely safer than travelling or staying in the U.S.

Gun violence in the U.S. is near epidemic, as is hate speech, racism and homophobia.

Plus, you won’t be asked whether you like America’s Supreme Leader or whether or not you have ever made a negative comment about the U.S. administration.

Simply don’t go. You’ll be infinitely happier and you won’t be offended, or treated like I was, ‘being called a “Northern Wetback” by the Immigration Officer.

You won’t be told “maybe you should just go home, now’, when you stop at a coffee shop in Grand Rapids, Minnesota filled with Trump signs by the patrons when they discover you think Trump isn’t good for Canada. Again, like I was.

You won’t be asked for your phone and password at customs by American Customs and Border Protection agent, and when you refuse, denied entry, like my neighbour.

You won’t be refused entry at customs because the agent asks, “What do you think of our New President?” And then you answer truthfully. (This one was the most egregious, as the two men were Jesuit Priests from my University going to a conference in the U.S.

So maybe, instead of being insulted you choose somewhere more enlightened, more accommodating and empathetic.

Maybe, if you want to see real culture, go to France, or Spain or Norway or Iceland.

Europe is infinitely more interesting, educational and inspiring than throwing away your money in Las Vegas, or visiting tourist traps like Disneyland or the shark beaches of Florida.

Americans only care about taking your money.

They aren’t our friends, allies or partners, and it’s time to recognize that all they want is to annex Canada for our resources, mineral wealth, oil and gas, timber, water, etc., etc.

So for the foreseeable future, and for sure for at least all of the next four years, do like me and plan to never set foot in the U.S. or buy another American product.

I bought a new car a month ago, from Japan, made in Japan. I bought a motorcycle two months ago, made in China and rode it across Canada. It was a lot more dependable than a Harley Davidson and I could have bought three more for the price of one HD CVO.

We’ve booked our winter month long vacation to Spain and to travel by car throughout Spain, Portugal and France.

We even cancelled a trip to Hawaii for 2 weeks, and booked a bed and breakfast on Kootenay Lake in BC.

Take the challenge, and see if you can stop all your business trips to the U.S., and FaceTime instead. You’ll save money that you spend on another holiday in Canada.

Support concerts in Canada, with Canadian musicians. Buy Canadian wines (we have some of the best in the world as well), buy Canadian Whiskey and Canadian Beer, not American. Besides American beer is like riding in a canoe. The closet to water you can get.

So Elbows Up Canada!

Save your loonies and toonies, instead of spending it on loonies in Washington who actually ‘hate’ Canadians at worst, and don’t respect us at best.

Enjoy Canada, eh?
