The majority of Americans are living under a delusion. Canada, the EU and the UK are not increasing their defence budgets because they’re worried about the U.S. leaving NATO.
Yes, Russia’s threat against Ukraine and the Baltic States in particular is an issue, one that NATO will and would have handled themselves in any event.
It only made sense, that as the largest country in terms of GDP and population within NATO, America would pay more, as each nation also will be paying the same percentage of GDP on its defence, as NATO has asked for each member state to do so.
But if you think the rationale for that is due to America ‘leaving’, you would be dead wrong. The (32) thirty-two member states are arming themselves and increasing their defence budgets and the size of their militaries, primarily because they no longer feel they can trust America.
It’s that simple.
Canada alone has the same GDP as Russia. Canada’s population is 41 million, while Russia’s is 142 million, yet Russia has been fighting a war that is now in its fifth year and has cost Russia 1.2 million men, either dead, injured or missing.
Russia is expending 40% of its budget on war, and 7% of its annual GDP.
The reality is that NATO is not afraid of Russia, — without the United States. Trump keeps threatening to leave, while NATO is quickly coming to a position now that it wishes it would.
NATO is constrained from doing what needs to be done by two nations, the USA and Hungary, both led by autocrats. The constant demands, and the concessions Trump keeps making to Putin, you would think Trump was his ally. Meanwhile, the attendant threats of the US against the other NATO nations in relation to actions that they wish to take in support of Ukraine continue.
Trump’s constant whining about NATO not supporting the US is total hogwash. The only time Article 5 of NATO’s charter has been implemented was after 911, and many nations stayed throughout either the entire debacle or a significant portion of the 20 years that the war in Afghanistan lasted, which in the end, achieved absolutely nothing.
America wasted $2.2 Trillion, yes, trillion on the war in Afghanistan, and the Taliban that were there in 2001, are still in control of Afghanistan today in 2026.
Meanwhile, as illustrated above, the US has essentially withdrawn its support from Ukraine, even assisting Russia by lifting sanctions on the sale of its own in order for Trump to save face over his asinine Gulf Debacle, which has caused a 20 million barrel per day shortfall of oil being supplied, driving costs ever higher.
Trump and his God of War, or whatever childish name he’s now given himself believed that they could create regime change, install a puppet government and then steal the oil for America to profit from. However, with absolutely no strategy, no preparation, no objectives, no timeline and now, the possibility of seeing not just oil and gas prices skyrocket for months, if not longer, while the Straight of Hormuz remains closed, Trump, like the simpleton he is, again attacks NATO.
Someone needs to explain to Donnie what NATO constitutes, that being a defensive organization meant to protect its members against aggression. It has no responsibility or wish to attack another sovereign nation. That is the opposite of NATO’s mandate and the reason for which it was formed.
On top of that, Donnie never even had the intelligence to seek consensus or to inform his once, ‘allies’ within NATO. For the last number of years, Trump has done nothing but foment dissent within NATO, and has called it obsolete, a paper tiger, and now today, cowardly.
I only have three words for Donnie Shinsplints or whatever cause him to avoid serving his country, five times when requested.
Donnie, “Go fuck yourself.”
If there is a coward in NATO, anywhere, he lives in the White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC.
So in summary, irrespective of whatever comes out of the mouth of a pathologic liar, convicted rapist, racist and thief, NATO’s members will gladly look after their own sovereign countries.
In fact, they will I believe, without doubt, ask America to close its bases and send its troops home.
It’s no wonder Trump is calling for hemispheric hegemony. America will be losing its global power and reach by the time Trump leaves office.
Meanwhile NATO is preparing to defend itself from the United States, and not just militarily. Trade, foreign relations, policy alignment as well as military alignment will likely end in the next few years. Canada is aligning itself with NATO, the EU, the UK, Japan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand.
Canada is building new relationships with China, India, MERCOSUR and the emerging economies of the world, particularly those in Asia and South America.
Meanwhile, America is no longer any nations ally except for Israel, and possibly Russia.
No? Time will tell. The truth certainly won’t be coming from the mouth of the President of the United States.
